Today we are discussing fair use:
Station 1: Here we made creative commons licenses for our blogs. It felt very empowering to take ownership of our work in a digital space. We acknowledged that our intellectual property was worth protecting--that someone else may even want it!
That could be a very cool experience for students who may never have imagined themselves as having something to license.
Station 2: Here we looked at www.ncte.org/positions/statements/fairusemedialiteracy
This is a document that helps educators navigate the unfamiliar waters of fair use so that we can guide our students through the process as well. We discussed many aspects of this including the importance of audience. For example, if a student is using a song in a video that will only be shown to our class, that may be less worrisome than if that student then put that video on their blog and attempted to profit from it.
We also discussed that the ability to use various media should not be used as a crutch by students or teachers. Media should provide a transformative element to the piece in question rather than to enable us to be less creative.
